Since 1990, Yaskawa G3 inverters have been responsible for keeping 25 large satellites beaming both television and telephone signals across Spain, d Africa and South America running seamlessly.
Now due for an upgrade, the customer had to have the best. He had to have quality and reliability. He had to have Yaskawa.
When Mr Lorenzo Iniesta, Satellite Centre General Manager and maintenance engineer of Telefonica Spain was charged with handling the retro-fit, what was priority for Mr. Iniesta was that the quality and reliability of the product remained at the high standard that he had become accustomed to. It was also important that this upgrade was handled with little to no downtime, ensuring that the satellites at Telefonica Satellite Communication Centre, located in “Armuña de Tajuña" (Guadalajara), continued to service its vast area of receivers, covering southern Europe, Northern Africa, and South America. Mr. Iniestas’ first and only choice was Yaskawa.
Mr. Iniesta called on Jesús García of Numerical Control Engineering (NCE sl) to handle the upgrade. NCE sl, located in Moncada i Rexach, Barcelona, Spain has been a log term partner of Yaskawa Engineering Europe (EEU) handling all service requirements across Spain and Portugal. Mr. García and his team of highly skilled engineers were tasked with replacing the current G3 Yaskawa units with G7 units.
Each satellite contained two units, which were responsible for controlling the Azimuth movements of these vast satellites boasting an amazing diameter of 18 meters. The "Azimuth" is the compass direction the antenna is pointed towards, relative to a magnetic north. This is also referred to as the left or right movement (position) of the satellite antenna.
The retro-fit is scheduled to run over the next two years ensuring minimal downtime with maximum reliability performance backed by the quality assurance of the Yaskawa product and the expert installation from NCE sl and Yaskawa Engineering Europe (EEU).
